Chapter 1
It was a typical bleak wintry
day for the City That Works. The clouds had been hanging low and gray in
the sky. Any Chicagoan will tell you that it was a sure sign of a major
snowstorm.
Samuel
Levitsky was stepping down the boarding ladder of his Boeing Business Jet a
modified Boeing 737-800 that had just landed at MidwayAirport at his private hanger. This plane was one of
six that he owned at sixty-nine million dollars each. (After the planes
executive conversions.) He also owned a fleet of eight helicopters that were at
times loaned out to various local hospitals as Angel Flights to fly patients in
for medical care at no charge to the patient they carried. Sam is not a very
noticeable man; some people may even say he is effeminate in his speech,
mannerisms, and physical stature. His previous wives have said that the first
impression of Samuel is that he is gay; after making love with him all other
men seemed gay. He is all man and a Barracuda in Business and his Divorce
Settlements.
His
business contacts called him “That Jew Son of A Bitch” but, not to his face.
Sam would cut their testicles off, feeding them to the offenders and they knew
it. To his family, Sam was always there for them in any manner that was needed.
Sam was in reality a Back Street Alley Fighter in the business world. He once
said that nothing was fair in the business world except winning the Prize,
their corporations. He had destroyed many a Chief Executive Officer, bringing
several to suicide after ruining them financially. If you can’t win the game,
don’t play it, Sam would say.
As Samuel stepped onto the
tarmac from his plane, near his company's private hanger, his longtime
chauffeur and friend Vincent greeted him. “Did you have an enjoyable flight
from Moscow, Sam?”
“Vincent, since when is any
flight enjoyable, you know I hate traveling by plane. Did Leavitt come with
you, Vincent?” quickly changing from the detested subject of flying.
“Yes, he did as well as being
very hostile…He's waiting for you in the Limousine, sir.”
“Did he attempt to get
information from you?” Sam asked.
“Not at all, sir; not a word
was volunteered, so I assumed him to be angry.”
Samuel proceeded to get into
his Mercedes-Benz Stretch Limousine and was greeted by his long time friend and
attorney Joshua Leavitt saying, “Hi Sam, what’s so dammed important that you
pulled me out of the office? You know I’m working on the Cyber-Tech deal and
Thanksgiving is only days away.”
“My friend, you are the
atypical attorney; just the facts, Huh? This was found in my office in the
Tower.” Sam handed a box to Josh, which was the size of an engagement ring box.
Josh opened the box that
contained a device smaller than a dime in diameter and thickness. He picked it
up, looking at it with a scrutinizing eye. After looking at it closely Josh
said. “Is this what I think it is? It was found in your office in the Tower?
How in the hell did they get in there? There are only two ways of it getting in
there. Both our Security Force and Electronic Surveillance protect those
entrances. Either this is simple Industrial Sabotage, or the Feds did
it. Since we are in the process of the takeover of Cyber Tech, I must surmise,
that it is the Feds.”
“An astute assumption
counselor. Harry Goldstein made some discrete calls through his sources. It was
made in Israel for the Feds as part of some Black Project. It
can transmit not only voice but also real time video grabbed from our
surveillance cameras. With the proper programming, it can also grab onto
Infrared, Laser, or Microwave links and receive and transmit computer data from
the source to a satellite. Which means wireless computer networks too, such as
what we have. This one was setup with that programming."
“Since Cyber-Tech has a great
deal of Government Contracts, we have to assume that this Bugging was done by
the Feds. I believe that this is not going to be the end of this episode. I
also think the Feds are worried that we're going to divide up Cyber-Tech
and sell it off through several outlets without them having a say about it.”
Sam stated, looking directly at Josh.
The silence in the Limousine
didn’t last long being broken by Josh “I think we should have several
contingency plans in the eventuality that the DoJ (Department of Justice)
decides to come after us or you Sam. Do you have any ideas?”
Sam lowered the privacy
partition speaking to both Vincent and Josh saying, “Vincent, after you take
Josh home I would like you, Maria and Constance to meet with me in the kitchen.
Josh, I would like Vincent to pick you, Bryan and Harry up on Friday to meet me
at the C.A.C. (Chicago Athletic Club) for lunch about 11:30. Vincent, you are
to park the car and join us.”
Vincent looked into the rear
view mirror and raised his eyebrows focusing upon Sam. There was a
determination etched into Sam's face that he had only seen while dealing with
adversaries.
With Vincent as Major Domo,
Executive Security, Chauffeur and his wife Maria as Chef they had been in Sam’s
employ for many years. Maria and Vincent considered him their adopted son; Sam
in return had never considered the couple as employees. They had always been
treated as family as was Mrs. Constance Flemming his private administrative
aide.
Vincent knew there was
something important on Sam’s mind, feeling that it was his responsibility and
duty to help his adopted son with any advice he could give. All of the
household staff loved Sam and would give their full loyalty to him.
Sam looked at Josh and said,
“ I would like Bryan at this meeting as he will be an integral part of my
contingency plan if it ever has to be put into motion. Do you think you can
arrange it?”
“Sure Sam, the meeting will
be at 11:30 at the C.A.C. What the hell do you have in mind? I hope it isn’t on
the fringe of any illegalities.”
Sam looked at Josh saying, ”
You certainly are a stereotypical attorney, Josh. I don’t know about any
illegalities. I haven’t worked out the fine points yet. If I get into trouble
at least, I have access to the best legal team headed up by you or at least
your input.”
The Mercedes took the exit
ramp off of Lake Shore Drive, turning left toward Mansion Row on Chicago’s Gold
Coast. This is one and always has been one of the most prestigious areas of
Chicagoland. One of Sam's neighbors was the Cardinal of the Catholic
Archdiocese of Chicago.
The Mercedes entered a
driveway pulling in front of an old VictorianStyleMansion that Sam called home. Sam opened the Limousine door,
getting out said, “Vincent please take Josh anywhere he requires to go, return
home as soon as possible. Josh I’ll see you on Friday. Have a happy
Thanksgiving, as I don’t think I’ll be in the office all week. I may also be
out of touch with everyone until I see you on Friday.”
Sam closed the door of the
Limousine. Moving quickly to the entrance portico, he opened the door going
inside the mansion.
Chapter 2
Sam entered the Foyer taking
off his topcoat, gloves, and scarf. He hung the coat and scarf he wore on an
antique brass coat rack that had been there since moving into the mansion. In
some ways he liked this old building as well as in other ways despised it.
There were too many memories here some that were good in addition to others
especially bad.
The good memories were of his
children (Emmanuel (Manny) his oldest at 13, Ann at 12, Linda at 10, Lynn at 8)
and his first wife Elaine. All of the children were born in this house. It was
a home filled with love supplied mostly by Elaine.
Elaine was the most perfect
combination of wife and mother. She could adapt to any situation or social
setting. She was comfortable in jeans and a sweatshirt or a designer evening
gown. Her smile could place anyone at ease no matter what his or her station in
life was. Sam finally brought himself to the conclusion he still loved her,
missing her very much.
If you spoke to Elaine today
about Sam, she would say nothing but good words about him. He took good care of
them financially and being always there for her and the children. Their
marriage broke up due to his Workaholicism in building his business empire from
scratch.
Sam motioned his head to
clear his mind of the reverie. He suddenly noticed the smells coming from the
kitchen remembering that Thanksgiving was coming soon. He also had to remind
himself that his children had decided to stay with Elaine for the Holiday.
They normally switched back
and forth on the Holidays with the kids. In actuality, he was supposed to have
them for Thanksgiving but for some reason, they asked to be with Elaine.
Elaine had asked him two months ago if they could exchange Holidays. He
consented but felt disappointed not to see and hold his children; at least he
would have them for Christmas.
As Sam walked through the
house to the kitchen, he thought he might later telephone Elaine and the children
to tell them he loved them. He wanted to speak to Elaine desperately about a
possible reconciliation he had thought about on the plane. Although it may be
a wild guess for their reconcilement to happen in this lifetime, nothing could
be taken from the realms of possibilities.
Sam entered the kitchen while
Maria was preparing vegetables. She greeted him as if he was her son telling
him to sit at the table overlooking the fishpond that was frozen over.
“Was your trip successful
Sam?” Maria asked.
Sam looked at her saying, “I
think it could have been better but was alright, at least the Deal is closed.”
Maria could sense that there
was a considerable amount of mental strain building in Sam’s demeanor, She knew
Sam too well not to notice the strain. She decided she would not say anything
about it as she truly felt that Sam was her son.
Maria had had a baby boy many
years ago before marrying Vincent. She had given that child up for adoption at
birth. She had always prayed to the Almighty that her son was well taken care
of and loved. If she had kept the child, he would have been the same age as
Sam. She treated Sam with all her maternal instincts and love.
Maria was only 14 years old
at the time, having been raped by her Best Girl Friends Father one night while
staying at her house. The end result was a child for her, a jail sentence for
him with the loss of his life in Stateville Penitentiary.
Maria’s family was of
Sicilian descent, living in an area called Little Italy, Taylor
Street or the most derogatory of slang terms Dago Town.
As with all Sicilians, family
was a matter of pride and passion. Her father was prepared for a Blood Vendetta
on the man that raped and thereby impregnating her. However, Maria and her
mother talked him out this behavior. They kept telling him the U.S. was not
the Old Country and to let the Law handle it, not The Mafia Capos.
Vincent and she had known
each other all their lives. He had heard what had transpired from his sister
while he was stationed in Germany during the Cold War. Although it was too late
to tell Maria not to give up the baby, he still decided that he wanted to marry
her, though she was too young to do so.
After Vincent returned, a
whirlwind fairytale courtship ensued after several years and they were married.
They later had a child together but the child died during the delivery with
complications.
Until Sam hired Vincent and
Maria, it was one poor job after another. Because of past favors he owed to the
Mob they approached Sam for a Favor to interview Vincent and Maria.
Although Sam was more than a
little peeved, he was put into a situation by the Mob to hire them
because of past favors in the business world. Sam and Elaine immediately liked
Maria and Vincent when they were interviewed both being hired that same day.
Sam thought it was better
then having the Mob as a partner, possibly losing everything he and
Elaine had worked so hard for these past years.
At the time of their divorce,
Elaine told both Maria and Vincent to stay with Sam, Elaine had said for them
to protect, and guide him. Sam had no idea Elaine had asked the couple to do
what she asked, the couple really did consider all of them family. That is
exactly what they did.
The back door opened with
Vincent walking into the kitchen. He sat in a chair opposite of Sam after
taking off his coat and hat. Maria started bringing a multitude of food dishes
to the table for them.
Mrs. Constance Flemming,
Sam’s Personal Assistant entered the kitchen. She immediately started to help
Maria to bring the food to the table. She too had been working for Sam for a
great many years and was as close as a sister to him.
Constance was in desperate financial straits after her husband
and newborn child had died. They both had died accidentally in an apartment
fire while she was at an English class at DePaulUniversity.
When the man and child died
there was just barely enough to bury them decently with nothing left over to
support life on. She was on the verge of eviction and loss of her sanity when
Sam had hired her after reading of her plight in the newspaper.
