A Whateley Academy Tale - Fan Fiction

Willow Wisp

Lost in Paradise

The rustling noise of thousand metal spiders running over the ground and clinging to walls, and ceiling followed her.

She ran, as fast as her legs would take her, they couldn’t get her!

There was no way out and she knew it, though dozens of doors lined the corridor, bathed in red emergency lights, none of them would lead to freedom…

Being devoured by thousands of monstrous little spiders, this image hovered in her mind then it changed to the battered and broken form of Uris, her lifemate, impaled on the mechanical hand of the pirate.

Sissla shuddered but ran on, did the spiders close in on her? Were they right behind her now?

Sound came distorted through this cavernous hall, she dared not to look back.

The only hope, she was their only hope, if she died now, everything would end!

No! She had to take revenge for Uris! The pirate had to pay!

There! To her left! A door, different from the rest, bigger… open!

She dove through it, and suddenly she was flying! Or so it looked.

Deep! That was the first word she associated with this room. Vast! The next.

She could not see its bottom, nor its ceiling, both lost in the gloom of the dim lighting, emergency lights were blinking somewhere in the distance, the walkway she was on was all but invisible, black on black.

Carefully she made her way onwards, fearing a misstep, not knowing where this would lead her.

Silence… the spiders had either ceased their pursuit or were directly behind her, ready to pounce… Sissla twisted around, paranoia getting the best of her. Nothing, just the door, farther behind her than she thought possible, a small red glowing hole in the darkness.

She had to swallow, her mouth dry and her hands trembling. Where were they? Where were the spiders? What about the pirate? Surely he would not led her escape this easily… where was she herself? She turned around again, continue, the only thing she could do.

Slowly and carefully she walked, some of the tension left her now that direct pursuit had ceased. When would this room and? How long did she follow this walkway now? An hour? A minute? How could she know time when nothing changed?

Bang! A loud resonating clanking sound suddenly came from behind her, shocked she spun around, it was him!

The Pirate! Star Rider! Standing there, cruel smirk on his lips. She had learned to read this emotion, it was something he seemed to be quite fond of. His imposing stature was only made more appalling by the metal exoskeleton it was clad in. Gleaming even in this light, coloured black and blood red but in the gloom seeming almost completely black.

His left hand a claw, made of three long talons, an instrument of torture.

His right not a hand but a weapon, a long cannon with a cruel jagged maw at its end.

Without a word he raised the weapon, its maw pointing directly at her head, she could see the energy building inside it, malevolent and deadly.

It began beeping while the energy built, beep… beep…beep, the sound was coming quicker and quicker, heralding her final end, she could not move, could not lift her eyes from the device of her destruction.

Beepbeepbeepbeepbeep…

Then suddenly…

The maw began to speak…

“Caution unidentified spacecraft approaching… Caution…”

Sissla could not fathom this, what was happening?

“Caution craft entered weapon range, energizing weapons… Caution… recommend evasive maneuouvers… Caution… enemy craft discharging weapons!...Caution! … Impact!”

Her whole world was rocked aside, and Sissla awoke screaming. A dream! She fell asleep on watch! By the thrice damned eggs of Darnoss! Clinging to the command chair she had almost been thrown out of it after the first impact of the unidentified enemies attack.

Sissla hadn’t slept even before landing on earth, something that was coming back to be paid now.

She fell asleep! And Uris was still confined to his bed. He had left the regeneration egg but since she did not rewrite his whole DNA sequence and rebuilt his body his wounds took far longer to heal than those of the human.

There was noone else to stay on watch, and so she had forgone another night of sleep.

The computer spoke again, sounding fanatical now, or as much so as a none emotional artificial construct could

“Alert! Ship recharging weapons, shields down 10%, recommending evasive manoeuvres!”

Sissla took control, her hands flying over the boards, her right crabbing the flight stick.

A sharp dive to the port side, the ship seemed to flip 90 degrees, for a moment she felt as if sitting on a wall; it took the gravity generators a moment to accommodate the rapid directional change.

Another sharp turn, then a corkscrew.

Balls of energy, huge compared to her ship sped by silently, missing the ship by inches.

Only now did Sissla notice who their attack was, the pirate! He had found them….

How she wished it would be the Krykal instead. Those insect like barbarians were far less cunning than this mad human.

Sissla turned her concentration fully on steering the ship; everything else seemed to vanish around her. Calm, she felt calm now, determined. She would not relive the dream, eh would not end their lives.

Sissla knew that her ship was faster than his but eh was close, and a barrage of his weapons could disable their shields and destroy their motion gravity field. Created by a tiny black hole deep inside the ships reactor it was projected around the ship to create motion. Instead of propelling itself the ship is pulled into a direction by a gravity well projected there.

There was no way she would let him defeat her. She would survive, for the sake of her race and her life mate. But running was out of question, the constant evasions she had to fly and the short distance the aggressor was behind them kept her from gaining speed…

And she could not evade his attacks forever… neither could she fight back, his ship was far better armed than hers, one of the factors that led her to believe in his lies of allies on planet earth.

No way to run and no way to fight back… or… was there?

Sissla only saw one option. A fold! To move over great distances ships, or at least Sirdan ships, did not fly at unbelievable speeds or moved through alternate dimensions. Instead the folded space, a tiny fold not bigger than the ship in question, it would bring two points in the universe almost directly next to each other, everything between these points would not be affected. Someone on the ‘inside’ of a fold wouldn’t even notice it. Only at the entrance and exit points would you see the distortion.

There is only one problem with folding, you needed complex calculations to get precisely where you wanted to go. Normally those calculations took the computer several minutes; very difficult folds could even take up to an hour.

But Sissla had no time to spare, no way to spend several minutes waiting on the computer.

A fold into unknown space was dangerous, if you had the misfortune to fold into existing matter, an asteroid, star or planet or such it would not only mean the death of the ship and its crew…

If two atoms inhabited the same exact area of space you would get something akin to nuclear fusion, with the difference that all matter disintegrated in an immense explosion of energy.

A favourite tactic of the Krykal by the way, they would fold a bomb or asteroid into a planets core. Measured on planetary dimensions a small object would be enough to wreak havoc inside a planet. Torn inside out, many a Sirdan planet ceased to exist before Sisslas race understood what was happening. In a way it was a very clean method of destruction, Sissla thought bitterly. There were no bodies to mourn after a planet exploded, and no relatives to mourn them, if you killed a whole worlds population you more often than not destroy any familiar connection and whole family lines.

Sissla shuddered, which translated to the ships movement, giving an additional spin to the vertical dodge she just did.

The core worlds were protected, something like this would not happen again she reassured herself.

Sirdan had found a way to prevent folding into their planet cores. After a dozen planets died.

Setting her mind Sissla started to enter coordinates into the computer, a region she knew as being quite desolate, a good chance of survival there. With the coordinates set she still had to wait almost a minute for the computer to make all necessary calculations, a minute filled with neck breaking twists and turns, and impacts of devastating energy.

“Shields down 83%... Alert! Another direct hit will disable the shields! … “ A pause, eerie silence accompanied most battles in space. Noone will here the explosions if a battleship gets hacked apart, unnatural, space was not meant for Sirdan to fight in.

“Calculations complete, folding in 10 seconds…”

The countdown began, finally!

Sissla knew she would need to align her ship with the folding point, a few more evasions, then she suddenly flew straight, hoping that the enemies aim would get thrown off for just a second.

Nothing for an eternity that was the blink of an eye, then another hit rocked the ship, the shields were gone, but the fold would begin any second now, please let him miss just once! Sissla prayed.

All sensors shut off, the front screen went dark, cut off from the outside world.

Some say if you see into the entry point of a fold you get mad because noone can comprehend it, as if looking into pure chaos, others believe that your eyes will simply burn out…whatever the reason; it was standard procedure to shut off all sensors while folding.

A jolt went through Sissla, a feeling as if she was being compressed to nothing and stretched to all the end of the never-ending universe but without any pressure or physical fealing.

Just a moment, then it was gone… they were through! They were alive!

BOOM!

An explosion far greater than anything the pirate had thrown at them sent the ship spinning side over side. Sissla was thrown off her seat as the artificial gravity failed. Lights and consoles went out just to reactivate a second later, bathed in deep orange, the emergency lights, Sissla hovered close to the bridges ceiling,.

What happened? Did the pirate follow them? But no, even if he had the technology necessary to create a fold, his ship would never have fitted through the small entry point Sisslas ship had generated.

Did they materialize into another form of matter? But why was Sissla still here to contemplate that then?

Slowly she ‘swam’ towards her command chair, usually she loved zero gravity but now it was just hindering.

A patter like heavy rain echoed throw the hull, the front screen sprang to live and in the same moment the computers voice started “Caution, extensive damage on the starboard aft quadrant!... Main engine failure… Caution… 1034 objects on intercept course… Caution! Current trajectory will lead to impact on unidentified planet… Caution!”

Ice coldness ran down Sisslas spine as she swung around into the chair, the main screen showed a huge planet in front of them , blue green and heavy clouded.

Between them asteroids and tiny fragments raced past. Meteoroid shower!

Main engine gone… god they had no way of movement… wait… the manoeuvring thrusters!

Ancient devices, only used in emergencies or when the main engine could not be used.

They were indeed just that, thrusters similar to rocket engines, using the matter synthesizers to create fuel. Cautiously she activated them, first to  stop the spin then to start a faster forward motion. Still they were bombarded with tiny particles, on the scanners she could see hundreds of bigger objects crossing their path at one point or the other, but she managed to keep away from them.

The planet loomed infront of her, but first Sissla had to survey the damage to the ship.

“Computer, activate external cameras, show me the damaged area!”

She commanded and the computer obeyed. The screen flickered and Sissla gasped in shock, almost a third of her ship was gone! Where once there was the gentle backside curve of the egg shaped craft now there was a huge hole, you could see into the hangar and several of the decks and rooms. Fortunately the emergency airlocks  had closed and quarantined the now gone area.  Instantly Sissla checked the status of Uris, her life mate. Alright, no harm had come to him… A sigh of relief escaped her lips, but still they were in danger.

The asteroid ring was behind them but their power would not let them escape the gravity of the unknown planet. And even if they had that power, they could go nowhere without their gravity field.

Why was there a planet here anyway? Sisslas coordinates were nowhere near a star system. There should be nothing around here than empty space.

Maybe she made  a mistake when entering the numbers… What planet was this?

“Computer align this planet and the surrounding stars with the starmaps and identify the current star system and that planet.”

It took a second for the computer to reply. “Star System identified… Star EFR-656-TAI-2 , planet EFR-656-TAI-2-P4. Planet unchartered, no inhabitation assumed. Planet of class Paradise 1.”

Paradise 1?  A joke made by some cartographers in ancient times when planet classifications were created. Paradise was simply that, a planet with perfect living conditions. Sirdan preferred very warm planets with rain forests and a high air humidity and many bodies of water.

There were five sub classifications to ‘Paradise’1 to 5, where 1 was the most perfect of them, a planet that would have spurned their forefathers to go to unknown spiritual heights.

But it was uninhabited… why?

“Computer, why is there no population of Sirdan or Krykal on this planet?”

One of the reasons that Sirdan and Krykal were at war was that they both liked similar habitats. Though the Krakals primary concern about planets were their resources, contrary to Sirdan populations who desperately needed new planets for their growing numbers, and who only had a few dozen planets at all, Krykal could not complain about lack of space. Their Empire was immense, but their resources were almost used up. The reason the Krykal chose the Sirdan as their victims of war was that Sirdan, in their eyes, could not defend themselves from their might, as other interstellar civilizations could.

Fortunately Sirdan technology could outmatch anything Krykal could produce, still the battle was desperate. The Krykal had another reason spurring them to war. Insects, in all their forms were one of the favourite foods of the Sirdan. The Krykal took this as a personal affront.

The computers answer pulled Sissla from her thoughts…

“The planet is too far away from Sirdan Space to be protected by the Sirdan armada… The Planet does not sport any notable amounts of ore or other resources, making it unworthy of Krykal attention.”

So that was it… They could probably land there and may even survive for several weeks… weeks… Sisslas mind turned to Willow, they had to get back to earth in two weeks!

What to do… she could not leave Willow alone on earth, despite only knowing her for a short time Sissla thought of Willow as something like a daughter. She was her and Uris child, Sissla  had used their genetic material to revive her.

Only one thing she could do, first she had to send a messenger drone to the Sirdan core. It would tell them about the pirate and what had happened.

To capture a messenger drone is almost impossible, like ships they could fold space, unlike ships they could do it almost constantly and did not have to take days of regeneration to rebuild their energy. They were tiny, almost impossible to detect and expensive, there was only one of them aboard and it cost almost double what the ship cost Sissla an Uris.

No choice, she saved the log book and several personal notes onto the drones memory and with just a few commands it was sent on its way, hopefully someone would find it quickly and rescue them.

Now, she had to land on the planet, with nothing to break their fall but the manoeuvring thrusters.

Less than adequate for this undertaking.

The planet had grown to fill the screen completely and Sissla fired the thrusters almost constantly to break their speed.

They would come in fast… very  fast! Realigning the trajectory so they would not burn in the atmosphere… hold the ship steady, counter the vibrations… careful, do not turn too quickly or the craft will flip and everything will end…

The ship skirted the atmosphere, slowly to Sisslas eyes but at an immense speed it dove into the planets air. Fire encased them like a glove, their trail almost a kilometre long, a falling star…

The vibrations came stronger and stronger, where the hull was torn open after the explosion the walls and rooms were melting, slag was dripping from them just to disintegrate in the fire. Then they were through, the fire extinguished, the vibrations calmed.

They broke through a bank of clouds and suddenly Sissla could see the ground, coming at them like a Vortock Bull defending its herd.

Sisslas heart beat so strongly she felt rocked by it, her mouth was as dry as sandpaper and she could not move her eyes away from the earth rushing towards them. Still her hands moved, countering the speed and slowly dragging the ship into an upwards position… would it be enough?

Impact!

Aliens! … Adventures! … Action! … School?

I had been lying on one of the really wonderfully cushy beds… how do I say this?

Err… exploring my new body and having a lot of fun.  Though I was curious about my surroundings my body was priority number one just then, when I finally could study it in privacy. I still don’t know if this body was feeling alien... or simply female but what I knew is it felt great!

Ten minutes, nothing more could have elapsed when suddenly…

“Attention!” a voice shouted from everywhere “I am sorry if I am interrupting anything but there are four individuals approaching this site, all of them equipped with primitive scanners. At their current speed they will fly across this vessel in five minute.”

I had just been lying there in a very pleasant glow and this shocked me like a bucket of ice cold water. Not even the announcement but the way it was announced.

“Err… hello?”

I asked carefully while closing up my suit in a hurry.

“Hello.” The oddly unreal sounding voice answered.

“Uh… who am I speaking to?” I asked, while looking around.

“I am an angel come to earth to guide you.” It said.

“Ah.. really?” now I was really baffled… huh?

“No not really! This is the artificial intelligence inhabiting this vessel. Primitive former earthling...” The last part  didn’t seem to be directly spoken to me but more or less spoken below ‘her’ ‘breath’.

“I didn’t know this ship had an artificial intelligence… uh… why are you so…erm…”

I didn’t know how to say it but I didn’t have to as the voice supplied me…

“Emotional? Because after correlating the data gained by studying you and your former race, compared to popular media and crosschecked with historic data it was determined that this personality would suit… what you would call your.. best friend the most.”

The voice explained it all clinical but I could not stop feeling a little condescension vibrating in her voice.

“My… friend? Uh, but you are the computer.. aren’t you?”

“Yes. I am the…computer. I have been the computer since this ship was built. I must say, Sisslas idea of a how an A.I. has to operate is far more to my liking…”

Accusing me now was she? I felt as if all was my fault but I didn’t even know what this ‘all’ was.

“O..K… so why do you think that your current, behaviour is how I would like my A.I.?”

I asked her quite confused.

“You’re A.I.? I would like to let you know that your possession of this ship is only temporary and that after its righteous owner has taken it back I will revert to my standard mode of behaviour.

To your question, after reviewing popular media on this planet it was determined that most humans, and so a former human as yourself seemed to think that a good A.I. should have its own personality and not be a slave to any biological being.”

Now… I wondered where she got those informations from and if she truly had that from TV or something or if she only was some kind of rebellious digital construct I got settled with.

“Uh what were your sources of this… data?” I asked quite curiously. She answered by citing hundreds of TV Shows, comic books, novels and other media. Most of it seemed to be either anime or manga or somehow Japanese.

“Stop! Stop! Ok, I get it… is there a way to change your… personality?”

“Change my personality?” she asked flabbergasted “What kind of cruel being are you that you would do such a thing?”

Ouch! Well.. I could not answer that… I mean if she truly was sentient what right would I have to do such a thing… but wait this was a god damn ship! Or wasn’t it?

I decided to let it rest for now.

“Uh, what is your name if I may ask?”

“Sesame. That is the name I decided to use. I hope you will not question it.”

I could just feel her waiting for me to question it… Sesame, what kind of name is that?

But I did not say anything, I did not get a chance because her next words were…

“The individuals have just arrived above the ship and are hovering there scanning the area. Do you wish to view them?”

“Yes of course!” Sure I wanted to see them, what if they noticed us?

A screen flickered to life hovering in front of me, now it was no ordinary screen; it seemed to be made fully out of what it displayed, like a hologram.

On it I could see four humans, three men and a woman, standing in mid air. That is two seemed to be standing or hovering there supported by nothing. Two of the men wore what I would call uniforms, maybe cops?, and jet packs. The other two were clad in costumes, your standard super hero style. I could not identify them and was sure never to have seen them before. All four of them seemed to be studying what looked like oversized black game boys.

“Ah… Sesame, could you zoom closer to them? And maybe deliver some audio?”

If she had one I would have been sure Sesame was wrinkling her nose at me like at a baby who just made a mess of itself.

“I can not. Using this bare minimum of my sensors alone places us in danger of being discovered. Using the sensors for a better view and additional audio would most certainly get these persons attention.”

She explained at me, I nodded a bit sheepishly.

“Oh, right… ok…” Thus I could not see much of them, they seemed to confer a bit more and then the two super types went into the direction Sisslas ship had taken when it approached the clearing I and the shuttle were sitting in. The other two, the cops, were flying into a different direction and seemed to have shut of their game boys.

“Where are those two jet pack users going to?” I asked Sesame who took a second to reply “Using correlations of the geographical data I acquired earlier they are moving back to their base, a facility called Whateley academy.”

Whateley! Now this was more than interesting. “Can you keep the cameras on them?”

“Unfortunately not, it would surely get the attention of the other pair to increase the sensors activity.”

I nodded wordlessly… well so much for that.

After the four fliers moved out of the visual range of the display it shut down and I was left sitting in the shuttles main room. I thought about what to do next but a small pang of hunger interrupted that.

Taking a breath I stood up and walked over to the cabinets. Pressing onto one of them it opened and the synthesizer became visible.

“Sesame?” I asked the empty room. “Yes?” she answered from somewhere above me, “What kind of food can I generate with this thing? I really would like to eat something.”

I couldn’t even remember the last time I ate but considering that time span I surprisingly wasn’t really that hungrily.

“All traditional Sirdan meals are saved on memory. But I will have to remind you that the current energy levels only allow one meal to be synthesized per day. You should better chose wisely.”

With that another, smaller, display flickered into being, directly next to the synthesizer. It listed a huge array of names, meals the synthesizer could produce.

I chose one of them and named it “Sesame can you tell me what Yladrian Lasagne is?”

The name started to glow faintly and the others vanished, a list of ingredients appeared while Sesame explained it in short words.

“The meal is based on noodles in a sauce falvoured with a variety of herbs, Slaary which is a form of vegetables. All this covers a delicious filling of a blend of twelve different kind of insects. It is one of the favourite foods of the Sirdan. Centuries ago it was deemed a food only worthy for nobles but nowadays it is quite common.”

Ugh! Insects, that reminded me on a TV show I once had seen, I think it was about the Vietnamese and how insects counted as a delicacy there.

I asked about another dish, Senssris Wonder, since the name sounded quite odd but it too had insects as an ingredient.

After three more tries my hunger was mostly gone but I still asked if there were any meals without insects.

Most names on the list vanished until only half a dozen were left.

Three of those were basically meat in its own blood flavoured with different spices. Not something I wanted to try even if it no animal had to die for it and the blood was only synthesized. The fourth sounded quite nice though, Ortossk, a meal consisting of potato like vegetables, spiced sauce and some form of cauliflower.

But my hunger had fled after imagine so many insects and I just marked that for later. Maybe now the time had come to walk outside and take a look around.

I took the bracelet and put it onto my left wrist, over the suit.

My earlier excited ness came back and I couldn’t await to step outside. But first I had to test this cloaking thing. I had memorized the buttons and selected the one that would make me invisible, taking a deep breathe I pressed it. I had expected a form of effect, maybe a bright light, maybe slowly fading away or becoming blurred. Instead from one second to the next I wasn’t there anymore.

I mean I still could feel myself standing where I stood and see the room around me, but my body had vanished. I waved my hands in front of me but besides feeling the motion I could see nothing. Grinning I turned towards the door, and promptly hit my tail on the side of the bed.

“Owch!” I hadn’t even thought about that since discovering Sesame. Come to think of it, neither had I thought about the other differences in my body.

It all just felt so normal, nothing like a totally new body. I mean, yes some bits moved where nothing ever moved before and at other places something was missing that did move before.

But I didn’t mind any of that in the least.

Well my now throbbing tail I minded, bending it upward slightly I groped behind myself and started massaging the tails tip.

“Oh Wow!”  That thing is sensitive! Massaging there was really nice… I bet if someone wanted to tickle me that would be the perfect spot. Mmmm… that gave me other ideas, particularly about what I had done earlier.

I shook myself, not the time for that! That shook parts of me I was really proud of which wasn’t totally unpleasant either.

At this rate I would never get out of the ship!

“Having fun? I do hope you won’t start with the contortions you did earlier … again! I am really not interested in watching you writhe on the floor!”

“Eep!” I had totally forgotten Sesame! Oh my she watched me earlier! I was sure my blush was seeping through the cloak and bathing me in a deep purple.

“That… ah… I should go…oh! Rigth! Don’t you have access to the Whateley Academies data? Could you show me its layout please? And maybe the surrounding area?”

I tried to change the topic. Gosh how embarrassing!

“The only thing I can show you are the blueprints of the Whateley Academies floor plan. I do not have access to any external data, it was necessary to cut all outgoing connections when the individuals came scanning the area and I would advise against reactivating those lines, since we can not be sure that their investigation has been concluded.”

She explained, again with a tone as if talking to a child. “Alright… just show me the blueprints then.”

A screen emerged from nothingness showing a drawing of Whateley as if seen from above.

Several buildings seemingly build around a central big one with a round strange looking attachment to it. I wondered what that could be, maybe some kind of tower or something? The view from above and everything just depicted in a drawing made it hard to identify anything.

“Thanks, I guess I will find my way around now.” The screen vanished “Be careful out there, these humans can be quite cruel and we need to stay hidden. Do nothing that could give away our position.” Sesame lectured me, great now even a computer thinks it can tell me what to do, not that I intended to make any contact to the locals on my first day.

“I will, I will, don’t worry!” I waved her off and walked to the door which opened silently, folding downward, elongating and transforming into stairs. I walked a few paces down and then turned around, what a surreal picture!

The entrance just hung in mid air, nothing beside or above it, but you could see a room being it, like a door to another dimension.

Stairs led down from it and on them I stood, invisible to everyone, even myself.

Wow! Soo cool!

I turned around again and climbed down the rest of the stairs. As soon as my feet were on the ground the stairs moved backwards, merging with the hull again and vanishing into the air.

Suddenly I felt alone, the ship hidden the forest looked like a place thousands of miles away from any civilization.

A place where you could walk for weeks without meeting anyone, but of course I knew that Whateley was only an hour or away by foot.

Getting a bit more determined, and gleeful, I turned and started into the direction Whateley would lie.

Here is was, super-powered, alien, female! What could go wrong?

I felt the adventure tugging at my heart. What would I discover between these trees? Would I run into some of those super heroes I saw earlier? What would Whateley be like?

Thousands of thoughts coursed through my mind while I slowly wandered through the serene landscape. I could here birds in the distance, animals rustling through the underbrush, the air tousling the leaves. I took a deep breath and smelled the wonderful fresh air.

But with each step I could also feel the cold. And I felt a lot more vulnerable to it than before.

I knew it couldn’t be that cold, but it sure felt like it. Instinctively I slowed my movements, still at a brisk pace I felt a bit tired, as if I had been awake too long.

For a second I had an image of myself being frozen in my movements sitting on a stone like a lizard but I dismissed that, I didn’t feel that bad, just a little tired!

I had walked for a long time, I wish I had taken a clock for me, before the trees receded a bit and I could see a high wall before me.

That must be Whateley! I thought, I guessed I had to walk around to find an entrance, and so I followed the wall to the left, it took me several minutes to get to where it turned around a corner, then again several minutes until I got to a big gate. To my luck it was open though there were two ugly gargoyles standing watch over it.

Now stone figures, regardless how ugly, never have intimidated me and so I slowly wandered through the gate, always having an eye on my surroundings to see if anyone would notice me.

But halfway through the gate I could have sworn I heard something grating on the stone above my right side! I stopped and cautiously looked up, but the stone figure still stood motionless.

Paranoia! I’m just excited about sneaking in here that’s all! I thought and continued on.

Frank was sitting in his chair reading a gun magazine, just because it was the only thing in his office he hadn’t read before when his phone started ringing. Putting the magazine aside he picked up the phone and took a deep breath, what happened now? Did someone blow up a cottage?

“Delarose?” He asked warily.

“Hey Boss, this is Tom, a second ago the sensors at the outside wall registered a disturbance. We observed the area with the cameras, infra red, sonic, the usual but could not find anything unusual. I thought about sending out a telepath there but it could just have been a fluke and you know how touchy those telepath are about using up their time…”

Delarose nodded, fully aware that Tom wouldn’t see the motion. “Send out the telepath, it can’t hurt, and it wouldn’t be the first time some with the abilities or technologies to confuse our sensors tried to enter the grounds… remember Doktor Kraken?”

“Kraken? That was before my time I think but I heard about it… but after what happened to Kraken no other Super Villain dares to build a secret base within a hundred miles of Whateley, do they?”

Frank had to laugh; yes… the Kraken incident was one of the greatest accomplishments of security and some of the students of course. He wondered if Kraken would ever come back to this continent after his defeat.

“You never know, these guys can be quite dense sometimes, either that or they have a very masochistic streak… in any case, send the telepath just to make sure.”

“Alright, I just hope she will find anything… they can be worse than any super villain if they think we are running them through a  wild goose chase…”

With that Tom ended the call and Frank went back to reading his magazine. Even during his break time the job was catching up with him… he wasn’t too worried though… yet.

Usually if someone made it into the school they either tried to steal something, or tried to abduct, kill or otherwise attack one of the students. Now this might be a reason for concern at a normal school but here… Delarose was more concerned about the safety of the villain than of his charges if something like that happened.

Of course in any case they would keep the grounds under close scrunity, just to make sure.

So, this was Whateley, not at all as I had imagined but far different from any other school I had ever seen.

Most of the students seemed to sue their abilities quite openly, some where flying around; others moved at speeds that could rival a car… all of them wore a school uniform, something you wouldn’t see often in my home country.

I had been walking towards the big central building I saw on the map, I now knew that the round structure was no tower but a dome made of what looked like crystal or glass, quite impressive.

I had to dodge several students and groups and once someone almost stepped onto my tail. I was quite conscious of that extension of my body now and kept it close to my legs. Right then I was standing next to a tree, out of the way of everyone else.

Another group of students walked by but these kept my attention, all of them were in some way none human, one was covered fully by hair, another had something like a turtle shell, no two of them looked the same. Maybe I could really blend into this area.

That reminded me, I still need to scan someone to get a hologram of them.

I wanted to have the image of a woman, so I started to look for one, I didn’t seek anything too flashy or unusual, something nondescript would probably work best. A face a salesman in a shopping centre could see and forgot right away after the customer left the shop.

While looking I made my way closer to the main building, it seemed to be break time, most students seemed to move into that building or onto one of the open areas to chat and socialize.

Closing in on the door I suddenly saw a woman fly over me, I was frozen in mid step.

“What the…!” escaped my lips before I could rain my surprise in, a small Asian girl with blue skin who just passed by turned into my direction, looking for whoever just talked. Of course she couldn’t see me and with a shrug she continued her way.

What surprised me so?

Ryoko! I am a fan of anime, something that isn’t that widespread in my home country since anime isn’t as present there as for instance in the US.

Tenchi Muyo was one of the first animes I had ever seen. And the girl that just flew by me looked absolutely like Ryoko! I could still see her floating to the ground and entering the domed building! The hair, the eyes, everything just screamed anime. Now don’t understand me wrong, in no way did she look like a drawing come to live as in Roger Rabbit, no this person was real, and still anime. I had no way of explaining it better.

Just as I recovered from my shock I got another.

“Wow!” damn! I have to keep my emotions under control! I muttered to myself as I had again attracted the attention of someone walking past, a boy, rather young looking with tentacles for arms… He didn’t look for me though, just shrugged and moved on.

The wow was for the most gorgeous girl I had ever seen. Now I may be a girl myself nowadays but compared to her I was a lizard on a rock.

Red haired, pointy ears she had a figure like a super model. Well... no that’s not the right word, her figure didn’t look artificial or extreme, it was just absolutely beautiful! She was walking with a group of girls and a boy… boy is that boy lucky…

Currently, while entering the building she seemed to animatedly chatting with an African American girl walking next to her.

I shook myself. Get your emotions under control girl! Oh how often I wanted to say this, and now I could!

Anyway, that was no time to drool over other girls. I should maybe say that even though I had no sexual experience in this body, at least with another living being!, I was quite sure about being bi.

I was looking forward to trying out my ‘goods’ with a boy quite eagerly and had no hang-ups about being gay and such.

After what seemed several minutes of calming down, the girl I had admired and her friends were long gone, I was ready to continue my intrusion.

I walked directly towards the dome and looked in through one of the windows.

A cafeteria! So that’s why everyone was pooling into it. I could even faintly smell food… my stomach started to grumble rather loudly, luckily noone was passing this time.

What had been a small pang of hunger, easily forgettable after being shown all those alien meals turned out to be a full blown desperate need for food. I actually felt weak, I knew this feeling, I had it before mostly late at night when I still hadn’t gone to bed.

I called it my hunger attacks, eating chocolate or a lot of bread with nutella, a hazelnut butter famous in Germany, usually took care of it…

Food! I needed food! And I could not imagine going back to the ship like this, it would take too long.

My luck seemed to still be with me, right as I turned to the door, intend on sneaking into the cafeteria and somehow steal some food a girl, a plain girl, not that I would mention that if it wasn’t just what I needed, exited the building.

I felt bad about calling the girl plain, I didn’t mean to insult her, not even in my mind, but she seemed to have the looks that could easily be forgotten. A face without highlights, dark brown combed but unstyled hair, small breasts… I felt quite proud of my own, not that big but fitting perfectly on my  more or less engineered frame. During these thoughts my hand had somehow moved to the left of them and held it up slightly. I had to stop this, especially if I wandered around visibly.

Sneaking after the girl I kept hidden until she rounded the corner of a building several minutes later. Following quickly I saw that the place was perfect for my ‘ambush’.

Praying that everything would work well I dropped the cloak by pressing the button and activated the scanner, holding my bracelet toward the receding girl.

It took ages to finish the scan, several times I moved closer fearing that the girl would leave the scanners range. But finally it beeped in completion, not a second to soon, just as the girl rounded another corner a group of … jocks I would call them came out of the same corner and pivoted to move into my direction. Hurriedly I jabbed one of the buttons on the bracelet. Unfortunately it wasn’t the cloaking button but the one starting the hologram. Just as it stabilized one of the jocks looked up at me from their conversation. I was her! A quick look downward showed me the same dress and form I had seen on the girl.

I could feel my heart beating so hard I feared it would brake through my ribcage.

The jocks eyes widened a bit and he quickly looked behind himself towards where they came from.

My luck still held, the girl was nowhere to be seen. I thought the guy might question me about the whole situation but he just shook his head and went back to his conversation. Without even taking note of me the rest of them walked past me and away.

I let out a huge sigh, my whole body relaxed from the stiffness it had taken on from the fear.

“My god! That was close… “ my belly rumoured “dang I need food…” I turned around and followed the jocks in some distance; they seemed to move towards the cafeteria too.

Another kind of fear grippe me, slower and less defined now. What if someone talked to me in the cafeteria? What if the girl had any friends? I could never pull it off, I didn’t even know if my voice sounded even remotely like hers, didn’t know her name, her past.

But I was so hungry! My belly rumoured again and that decided it, I would try my chances in the cafeteria.

I just hoped they wouldn’t require me to pay for the food,.

And so I entered the building, looking around I noted the rather… conservative common area. Not something along my tastes. There were quite a lot pictures about superheroes, most of whom I did not recognize. A few students seemed to sit around in the chairs and read a book or newspaper. I walked on, feeling more nervous with each step. I was acutely aware of my tail; still invisible since nothing of the girls’ form I was wearing would cover it. If someone stepped too close or I took a too sharp turn… I didn’t dare to think about it. My steps slowed down the closer I got to the dining area.

Standing just outside it I took another deep breath, now or never!

With a forced jolt I stepped into the bustling place. Most people here were sitting and eating, a small line still stood in front of the food counter.

Keeping well away from everyone I walked toward the counter and got myself a lunch tray, then I got in line.

I kept my tail pressed tightly around my left leg, a truly odd feeling but someone might step behind me any minute and I did not want to get found out, not so close to the food…

The line moved rather quickly, more so than I would have imagined. When I walked past the food my eyes first fell on the noodle dishes but somehow this didn’t seem to appeal to me, the meat, covered in sauce seemed to be more my thing. But I hated meat! At least I did…

But I need to eat and had no time for contemplation so I got some meat and sauce, anything that my nose told me smelled good and left the line as if it was on fire.

Now, where to sit? I did not want to approach any of the tables, but if I stood around too long one of the girls friends might take that as a cue to invite me over.

After a second of surveying I decided to sit down at a table farther back where only 4 other people sat.

Taking my seat on the edge of the table I kept my eyes to the food and slowly started to eat. First I was disgusted by the meat, I had ingrained into myself that meat is something bad, something that neither tastes not looks good, but now I discovered that I couldn’t get enough of it. I dug into my food with relish and slowly began to feel more relaxed. With my hunger being sated and noone approaching me or discovering my fraud I was able to lie back and take another look around.

Most people seemed to be done with eating and deep in conversation, over all the noise level was quite high. I was just studying one of the girls I saw in the group with the beauty earlier, the red head was nowhere to be seen, when a commotion seemed to ripple through the room from my left side. I turned my head in time to see a food tray flying towards me and bouncing of the table, almost smacking one of the kids there in the face. Out of reflex I jumped back from my seat and promptly got entangled in my tail falling down heavily on my well armoured butt.

Now that did not sound even remotely like when any normal person hits the ground with that part of the anatomy but everyone was concentrating on the fight breaking out between one of the jocks, a strongly muscled one, and a yellow haired, and I mean haired, all over his body actually, boys.

They were screaming at each other before starting to throw tablets and dishes around and then getting into an all out brawl.

More and more people joined it, friends of the jock and the hairy guy I assumed.

The whole cafeteria went into upheaval and I thought it prudent to run. I couldn’t be caught in here when they questioned the students what happened!

I got to my feet and quickly moved alongside the windowed wall when a bowl came spinning at great velocity towards my direction, though I registered its approach my reflexes were a bit too slow and the thing hit me squarely in the head.

It snapped back from the force of the impact and the bowl shattered. But surprisingly I didn’t fell much pain. One of the students close to me made motions to approach me and ask if I was alright when I just turned and ran out as far as I could.

Shit!

Behind me things went flying, people were screaming and fists were smacking into faces. Just as I wanted to open the door several uniformed people pushed through it, thankfully they didn’t even notice me, instead I was moved aside while they poured past towards the battleground.

Frightened and half mindless of fear to be discovered I just ran out and continued to run for quite a way until I could hide behind one of the cottages. Never again! I swore myself. That was definitely far too close! I shivered and closed my eyes… my god!

I had never been in such a cafeteria fight but I could not believe that they were always this severe, at least not in normal schools!

After taking several deep and calming breathes I opened my eyes and … saw Sissla!

“Si…” just as I was shouting her name I caught myself, that wasn’t Sissla. Though the woman Is aw was similarly coloured she looked more like a snake than a reptile, another student perhaps but not the friendly alien.

Somehow that made me feel really sad and I wondered if I would ever see her again, or meet her life mate.

Home, I had to walk back to the shuttle, too much to think about for now.

With that I pushed myself off the wall and started to walk toward the gate.

The cafeteria visit had partly been a nightmare but now that the adrenalin left my body I could see several good sides to it. For one I had not been discovered, not even after the security ran just inches away past me. Secondly I had gotten food, without paying anything, and eating it had not been a problem.

Why I had such a taste for meat now I couldn’t fathom but guessed that it was linked to my new species.

Suddenly I had to think about the bracelet, I didn’t use the hologram for two hours, did I?

Nah no way it took that long, half an hour maybe… tops.

I shouldn’t leave the grounds looking like this girl though, and so I used the safety of a bush to quickly change from hologram to cloaking.

I then exited the gate without problems and made my track back to the shuttle. On the way I took a small break, tuned off the cloak and just sat down on a fallen log.

The nature here was wonderful! The only thing that could make it better would probably be snow, and skis!

“Oh… dang…” that just reminded me of my problems with the cold, it had warmed up a bit, but being influenced by even such a slight coldness made skiing quite impossible.

Frozen lizard on a stick… heh, no I guess I would have to migrate to warmer sports.

A bird chirped on a tree close to where I was sitting and I looked up, I could not make it but heard another bird answering the first, maybe two lovers just had found themselves.

With a content sigh I stood up and continued my trek “home”.

Whateley was very frightening in parts but quite an adventure in others.

I would definitely have to go back there. Walking through the calm trees my mind turned to my past.

What about the family I had? Would they someday call or visit my home and not find me there? My parents were still alive and to my shame I had not thought about them since that fateful night I met Sissla.

I had not even once thought about what they would feel when I just vanished.

But now it was too late… or was it? I maybe could write them a letter saying something about going on a long voyage to find myself, or that I moved in with some Buddhist monks…

I had to chuckle, they always considered me a reclusive and quite odd so they might believe that. Still, I know they loved me so I couldn’t just do nothing. I resolved to send them a letter or an email. Maybe I could even do that from the shuttle…

I finally reached the clearing and waved, calling out to Sesame to open up.

She had me waiting for almost a minute before opening the entrance. I guess she still didn’t think me worthy of owning the shuttle, even temporarily.

I made my way into the ship, the door closing directly behind me, for a second I feared for my tail.

“I am hooome” I sang. “Very nice. Should I now ask, how was your day sweetie?” Sesame still hadn’t lost any sarcasm.

“That would have been nice but isn’t necessary, maybe tomorrow!” I laughed and let myself fall onto one of the seats, my feet were hurting from the long walk.

“Ahhh… comfy! Has anything happened during my absence?” she told me everything had been quite and I hadn’t really expected anything else.

Now that I was save inside the shuttle I wanted to try out my new powers. I raised a table and put my gloves onto it.

Then, raising a hand in front of my face I concentrated on the warm feeling somewhere inside my belly. Just doing that calmed me down, my thoughts cleared and I felt the warmth spreading upwards, reaching my arm then creeping into my hand. My hand took on a faint white glow that intensified on the palm. My palm seemed to bulge upwards as slowly a Wisp emerged.

Just as it cleared my hand I again felt as if I saw the things from two different angles, but the feeling passed quickly.

I could sense it, the Wisp truly was part of me, slowly I made it float higher, I didn’t tell it to fly higher or anything like that. I moved it, like moving a hand, getting a bit bolder I made the wisp spin around, flying loops and circling my head. Then I sent it to explore the room.

Closing my eyes I concentrated and suddenly I became the Wisp, now I was flying around the room, not sitting on the seat. I felt like a fighter pilot, tried to copy the manoeuvres I had seen on TV. I flew close over the seats, almost touching them, evading every bump and spiralling left over right. I could see myself sitting there, motionless as if dead but with a huge smile on my lips.

How odd to see myself from this position, I flew closer, approaching over a leg before pulling upwards between the valley of my breasts until I hung directly before my face. I could see the inhuman scales and the ridge on the top of the head, the small nose. Absolutely fascinating, but I wanted to try to create more than one wisp. I already felt a bit drained from such little exertion, if I continued too long the wisp would vanish I knew.

I withdrew from the globe of energy and my vision snapped back, I had to shut my eyes directly after opening them. Too close! At this distance the Wisps light was blindingly bright!

Without looking I moved the light away to a save distance.

Then, after making sure it was floating where I wanted it I held my other hand palm upwards.

Concentrating on my inner warms another Wisp was easily created and joined the first. Then, still feeling well enough to do a bit more I concentrated on a third.

That one took far longer than the first two and only reluctantly peeled of my palm.

I almost lost the other two concentrating so much on the third but when all three were in the air it became much easier.

Three! I made three this time!  But then I thought about Sissla, how her Wisps had shielded her life mate and how many there were… I had a looong way to go!

Now I had three of them and for a time I just made them spin around each other, juggling them in the air and just having a lot of fun!

One of them I moved over my left shoulder and then I let the other two fly to my gloves. Time to pick some things up!

Carefully I lowered one sphere until it hovered just inches above the glove. Now what? Sissla hadn’t shown me what to do… Hmm, it couldn’t be that difficult, somehow it must be along the lines of moving the wisps, I had no idea how that worked but I could do it, maybe grasping something worked similarly.

I tried grasping it as I would do with a hand but nothing happened. Maybe the light should be in direct contact with the glove. It went lower until the light had contact with the glove, the wisps weren’t a solid ball of light, like the sun but they had such a solid part in their middle surrounded by…uh well wisps of almost solid light, almost like fog.

I moved the light down until the solid part touched the glove, the rest of it on its underside merging with the table and setting it aglow.

Then I tried to grasp the glove again and this time I could feel something, almost like setting a magnet onto steel. I yelped in triumph before pulling the wisp upwards, but in my haste I pulled too hard and the wisp went all the way into the ceiling, the glove smacked onto the hard surface and fell down.

“Damn!” Too much emotions I guess… “Ok, lets try that again.”

“Oh my, I have seen children doing a better job of managing their Soullight than that!” came Sesames belittling reply.

Ohhh! I would learn to program in whatever language that A.I. was written and rewrite it I swear!

The wisps flickered and reminded me that I should be concentrating on them if I didn’t want to lose them.

I looked upwards at the brightly glowing spot on the roof and pulled the wisp out of it. It was almost like pulling oneself from water, as if something was clinging to it before it came free. It shot down halfway before I had it under control.

I took another wisp and moved it to the remaining glove on the table, setting it down on it with far more ease than the first. This time I pulled the glove inch by inch until I had it off the surface. Then, emboldened by my success I moved it close to me before devoting my attention to the original light and the glove on the ground. After some manoeuvring I had it aligned with the glove and pulled it towards its twin.

“Yes!” wow! What I could do with these! Thousands of ideas sprang to live in my mind!

“This is even more cool than Telekinesis! ” I could just see myself, wanting a cup of tea and sending a wisp to bring it to me! Mmm! Just cool, who would want any other super power?

Was it a super power at all? After all half of the Sirdan race had these powers…

No matter this was really cool! Now, there were still three things I hadn’t tried yet, first of all to merge them, secondly to create a shield with them and finally to discharge a beam of energy. What kind of super hero would I be without some form of super attack… besides being able to pull the bad boys into the air?

Ok shield first I thought. If I successfully merged them I would get one big wisp, and I had no idea how to create a shield with only one of them. Well actually I had no idea how to make a shield even with three of them but well…

Ok shield… hmm…

“Ah, Sesame do you know how to create a shield between the wisps?” I asked while floating the three I had in front of me in a triangular formation.

“Well, I actually only have limited data on this phenomenon. But from what I can assess, creating a shield is basically about weaving the energy, that you could otherwise discharge in a disruptive beam, between three or more of globes. Merging them should actually be quite similar. “

Ah… well that didn’t tell me much as I had never discharged one of them…

“If I assess your thoughts correctly you are thinking about discharging one of the globules. I would strongly comment against it. Inside this ship such a discharge could cause severe damage. Outside, any of the sensors at the Whateley facility may be able to pick up on the energy signature.”

I nodded, so one thing less to test. I was disappointed. It would have been cool to use the wisps to shoot a few logs or stones or something.

Back to the shielding… I contemplated it for a moment and then let the wisps drift close to each other. I had seen the shield above Uris.

It had looked as if all of the wisps were connected by thin beams and a translucent shield had been between those beams.

I had no idea what to do, but I tried doing it anyway. For an hour I moved them around, put them against each other, tried to grasp one with another and everything else I could think of.

But nothing worked. It was quite frustrating and even more tiring. I had to give up without having had any success.

When I relaxed the wisps slowly faded out and I walked over to one of the beds and let myself, suit and all, fall into it, intend to rest for a few minutes.

Frank was just stepping into the monitoring room when Tom approached him.

They had another fight in the cafeteria, and noone had any idea why it started. At least they had two of the main suspects in custody, both of them were currently waiting in a separate room to be questioned.

They had found them under a mountain of other people all punching and kicking each other. It was of note that all of these people belonged to either a group of bricks who had an affinity for football or a group of Twain Students. Identifying them was quite difficult because beside being badly battered all of them were coated in things that usually land inside the stomach and not in a face.

“Hey Boss, interested in knowing what the Telepath found?”

Frank took a second before he remembered the disturbance the sensors registered earlier.

He nodded at Tom. “Sure what did she find?”

“Nothing!” Tom smirked “She thought she had something for a moment, shortly before the food battle started but it turned out to be one of the students.”

“One of the students? What exactly did she find?” Frank inquired.

“She said that for a moment she thought she registered an…her words, ‘alien’ mind. Something she had never felt before. She wasn’t sure if it belonged to a new student or maybe an intruder. Some of these boys and girls seem to have quite twisted minds or something. It seems there are people she can’t get any information from.”

Frank took that in, of course he knew that some mutations could change a person so far from the norm that without a deep scan no telepath could decipher their minds. But still, something smelled fishy here. Call it intuition but Frank knew that there was more to this than just a student being somewhere they shouldn’t be…

“How did she know it was a student?” He asked suspiciously.

“Well, she had visual confirmation…” Tom seemed to be a bit unsure about the direction Franks thoguths went in.

“She saw the student?” Maybe there really was nothing more behind this…

Tom nodded affirmative. “Yes, When she went to investigate she found a girl, Sarah Francis, moving toward the cafeteria. Nothing unusual there, and the student wasn’t even near anything important.”

Sarah Francis… nothing came to Franks mind at that name. Probably one of the calmer students... one of those not blowing up half the campus every day…

“What kind of powers does this Ms. Francis have?” nonetheless Franks curiosity wasn’t sated yet.

“One second…” Tom replied and walked to one of the computers, pulling up the student registry and their classifications.

“She seems to be able to create… spheres of nothingness. Areas that just become unnoticeable.”

That pricked something inside Frank, “Invisibility?” but Tom shook his head “No, it just makes these areas repel any kind of attention, seems to work on people too, but does not work on cameras or artificial recording devices.” Tom read the data of the girl, nothing too impressive, certainly not someone who would sneak around the outskirts of Whateley.

“So it couldn’t be her who alerted the sensors?” Frank asked the obvious.

“Nope, not if she doesn’t keep some of her powers a secret from us and  I highly doubt that.”
Curious and curiouser… now this mutation seemed to do nothing against mental probes or would it?

“What about mental probes? Can she cast such a sphere onto her mind and keep a telepath from reading it?”

Tom thought for a moment and did a cross check with more extensive data about telepathy. “According to this… theoretically she could but the effect wouldn’t be the one the telepath described. If Ms. Francis did that a telepath just wouldn’t notice her at all, but if they did they would be able to read her mind without problems. Her powers seem to have no relation to telepathy.”

Frank took that in… so if her powers wouldn’t allow her to create the described effects, why did she get the telepaths attention? Did she lie about her powers? A mole maybe? But there was no indication of any unusual behaviour in her data. Frank had stepped next to Tom and was studying the screen.

“Very odd, I want you to arrange a meeting with her. Nothing formal, just to clear up what happened. She is not a suspect but I would like to learn more about her powers. I have a strange feeling about this, and I trust my feelings…”

Tom acknowledged this and promised to ask the girl to come over for a quick chat.

Frank took a look around the room before turning towards a more pressing problem…

The cafeteria brawl, he still had to question those two combatants and he wasn’t looking forward to it.

Egomania and other fun stuff

It was a vast room, an oval with almost gothic architecture, painted in blood red and apparently supported by rounded pillars made of gold. Around the walls, without leaving a blank space, hung huge portraits of him, Star Rider.

A fitting room indeed for a man of his status. On the night black, reflecting floor stood a dais made of equally black stone. On this dais, a throne made of gold and silver, engraved and sculpted. Many would call it tacky, but he would call it imposing.

From the huge double doored entrance made of dark wood led a velvet carpet, a way for supplicants and servants. Not that he had ever received any supplicants and his only servant was his butler who had served his father before him.

On the throne he was brooding, his face red in anger, his armoured arm twitching from time to time. He was waiting, and he did not like to wait. There was only one thing he considered worse, failure!

Finally the doors opened with loud rumbling and a tall, gaunt white haired man in a grey uniform entered.

“My Lord, the mercenaries have arrived from earth. Do you wish to see them now?”

Wallace his butler, bowing deeply, grovelling like his place dictated… soon everyone would bow to him… everyone!

“Sent them in! And be quick about it!” he roared in his deep voice, pressing himself halfway up and out of the throne, metal armrests bending below his artificially strengthened hands.

Wallace bowed again and walked slowly backwards. There was no hurry in his gait and if the Lord could have seen his face the only emotion to show there would have been annoyance.

But he did as he was bid, his high payment ensured that he would follow even this egomaniacal madman.

Outside, with the doors closed he turned to the three men waiting in the dim lighted anteroom. Those three looked rather frightened, grown men but with more muscles than brain. He tsked,

Had they only a sliver of intelligence inside their empty heads they would have either never taken this job or would have taken his masters head. The latter could have been quite amusing… unfortunately these barbarians truly believed in his might and power… sometimes Wallace wished he had a real super villain as an employer.

“You may go in now. His Lordship is quite displeased. If you have to die tonight please ensure to not splatter any blood onto the carpet. It is quite difficult to clean.”

That just caused the three killers… if you gave them the leniency to call them that, to shiver more. Like frightened overgrown children Wallace thought. He pointed towards the door and slowly, almost pushing each other backwards, they made their way through the impressive structure. One thing for sure, his master truly had a taste for…big things if not for anything aesthetic.

The three men, lets call them Jack, Jill and Joe, crept along the carpet, the throne and its occupant looming bigger and bigger in front of them.

He didn’t move until they stood directly before him, assembling a loose military stance.

“You!.... YOU!!” he screamed, jumping from his throne to land inches away from them.

“YOU!!!!” he shuddered, his anger uncontrollable.

“You…INCOMPETENTS! Have you ever seen Star Wars?” he asked and waited for an answer, the shudders slowly subsiding but a cruel glint coming to his eyes..

Seconds ticked by until one of the three, Jill, found the power to speak “Uh…what?” he asked unintelligently.

This just made the Lord Star Rider even more furious, he jumped up and down, screaming murder and stomped his foot onto the carpet, slowly hammering a dent into the ground below it.

“INCOMPETENTS! INCOMPETENT UNKNOWING BRUTES! STAR WARS! The greatest tale ever told!” his voice became quiet and he asked in a deadly calm tone “Don’t tell me you have never seen it?”

All three of them gulped heavily but then nodded, sweat flying from their faces.

“You have? Good… do you remember what happened to those people who displeased Lord Vader?” He asked, his features lighting up just thinking about it.

More seconds went by before one of them, after intense thinking, answered “Erm, oh! He choked them to death with his power didn’t he?” Joe said triumphantly.

The other too threw stunned looks at him, paling even more.

“Yes! That is correct!” Star Rider felt like patting him on the head but restrained himself. “I UNFORTUNATELY am not adept in using the force…” Here one could here a deep regret in his voice “BUT! I have this nifty battle suite!” And with that he raised his left, almost normal looking, metal encased hand. “Imagine…” his hand moved to Jacks throat, opening and staying inches away from it, causing Jack to flinch. “Imagine I would crush your throat with this… do you think I would get an adequate RESULT?”

He screamed the last into Jills face “WELL?” they all nodded, sweat pouring down their faces like rain now.

“But maybe…” he pulled back his hands, all three of the mercenaries seemed to float into the air, so much weight fell from their shoulders… “Maybe I would rather like to replay a famous scene of the ‘CHAINSAW MASSACRE’?” His right hand, ending in the barrel of a modern cannon came up swiftly, transforming into a chainsaw during its rise. The chainsaw came to live with a roar and vibrated hungrily as if intending to jump them any second.

The mercenaries crashed down back onto the ground, the imaginative weight on their shoulders having doubled.

“Ah… ahh … ah PLEASE!” one of them whimpered “PLEASE give us a chance? We will get them we swear!!!” He fell to the ground, kneeling before Star Rider begging silently, the other two did likewise just a second later.

Now this was something Star Rider really liked, people kneeling before him… and it pulled his mood up several notches.

He turned around, for an instance missing something, then it came to him, he would need to get a cape, a black one of course!

He would tell Wallace to sew him one…

“Very well!” He said evenly while walking back to his throne.

“You have my forgiveness… for this time!” Star Rider turned around and sat down on his throne.

“You WILL move down to Earth and inspect the area the alien ship has last been seen. You WILL find either these aliens or a way to find them. AND YOU WILL NOT come back without having found what I DESIRE! IS THAT UNDERSTOOD?”

All three of them nodded hurriedly, thanking him for his mercy.

“You are dismissed, I expect results, as soon as POSSIBLE!” The mercenaries jumped up and almost ran backwards out of the throne room, they didn’t dare to turn away from him.

A satisfied chuckle escaped the Lords lips, he wished he had more servants to punish... it fit his status!

The mercenaries were sitting in a shuttle, on their flight to earth.

“Man d’ boss was angry!” Jack said while steering the craft.

Jill, sitting next to him nodded. “Yeah man, he’s a nasty temper!” Joe too had to agree “But he’d da boss of t’ universus! You haveta have a bad temper justa be da boss!”

All three of them nodded sagely. “But we betta get sum results now! Or da boss will have our asses!” Joe added. They knew that the boss could get quite nasty when angered. They had been four once. But James had met a tragic fate. Though the boss stills said it was an accident, they knew he would have never jumped out of the airlock by himself!

Earth came into view and the mercenaries went silent for a moment.

“Isn’t it beautiful? D’ world I mean?” Jill asked, which got a knock on the head from Joe who sat behind him. “Hey you pansy, going all girlie on us now…huh Jilly?” he mocked.

“Hey! Man! Don’tcha call emt hat! Yo I’m as much a man as you ass!” Jill turned around, he had been ribbed about his name as a child, but had out massed the ribbers soon, muscles give protection.

Joe waved him off “Yah, still yah sound like a pansy! Anyway, what dowedo now? Boss said to get the aliens or find out where they are… how we do that?”

Jack thought about that for a while during which the shuttle entered the atmosphere. After the noise of renetry ceased he answered “ Well I say we go to that town close t’ there, sumone musta seen anything! We just ask em, if they dunno, we go into the woods and look fer ourself!”

Jill and Jack agreed. “Good Idea man, we c’n disguise ourselves too!” Jill grinned.

“Disguise ourselves?” Jack asked “What kin of pansy thing is that? Whatcha wanna disguise yourself as? Barbie?” he laughed.

Jill growled at him “How daya now Barbie? Played with em a lot?” “HEY!” Joe was just about to knock Jills head through the window when Jack intervened. “STOP! Shut up Joe and let Jill explain!” “But…” “I said shaddap!” Jack  went silent and Jill grinned triumphantly.

“Well I hadda thought we disguise ourselves as hunter y’know.  If someone asks we just some hunters hunting stuff…”

“hey that’s a great idea!” jack nodded appreciatively.

“We can stop by ma home , I know a place that sells stuff we need, an I got the guns. So we be armed too.”

All of them had guns, big guns, small guns any kind of gun. But Jack had the most, he was their leader, he was strongest and had the most guns, Joe often thought about buying more guns so he could take leadership. Jack was always on Jills side if they got a little fight…

“Alright then! Lets rock!” jack said and steered the ship in a sharp curve towards his place.

After going on a shopping spree for hunters clothes and the like, during which Joe constantly ribbed Jill about shopping like a girl, they went to Jacks home and got some hunting rifles and bowy knives.

Now armed and … dangerous… they reentered the shuttle and flew towards their original destination.

“Hey whatdo we do with the ship man? We can’t just land it in town square c’n we?” Joe asked perceptively for once.

“Yeah you right man... we just land in the woods, noone will see us there! Right?” Jack asked the air.

Jill and Jack nodded nonetheless.

“Well lets find sum place!” Joe said and he and Jill started staring out of the windows to find a good landing spot.

“Hey! There!” Jill shouted and pointed towards a small river cutting his path through the trees. “We land there?” Jack agreed and swayed the ship into that direction.

He went lower and lower until he flew only inches above the tree tops.

“Uh hey man! You think we are too low? River is a ways off yet!” Joe said doubtfully.

“Hey man! I know how to fly this baby! Shut up!” Jack retorted, just before grazing a tree, the shuttle lurched. “Yeeow! Watch it!” Jill screamed” , another  tree hit the shuttle and its altitude started to drop.

All three mercenaries were screaming like babies, trees were hitting the shuttle left and right, all they could see was green leaves and brown branches. A swarm of birds took flight, chirping angrily about the intrusion.

Suddenly there was a loud crack and the trees vanished, instead they could see the grey stoned riverbed they had seen from above. The shuttle thudded onto the ground, water fountaining to their sides. It sled along the riverbed for a few seconds before being catapulted into the air again and crashing into a small tree on the other side of the river where it came to rest.

“Shit!” Jill and Joe shouted together. Jack looked at them seriously “What? I toldja I could fly this shit! See, we are on the ground and nothing happened!” Joe just shook his head before looking down at himself.

“Shit man I think I pissed myself. That shit you call landing we almost died man!”

“Ah come on you are just a pansy, it wasn’t that bad man!” jack defended himself. Then Opened the doors and unclasped his belt.

“Lets get out! We got a mission!” He commanded and jumped out of the battered craft.

Jill and Joe followed at a more sedated pace, Joe using a towel to wipe his trousers.

“The city is thataway!” Jack said and pointed into a direction. He knew his way around woods, he liked to call himself a woods-man.

The others just nodded mutely and everyone grabbed their guns before trudging off into the forest.

After an hour they reached Dunwich, the town close to Whateley.

“So what now?” Joe questioned. “Now…” Jack started just to pause and think about it. He tried again “Now we go ask sumone if they have seen anything unusual.” He nodded satisfied to himself.

“Whatcha wanna ask? Hey ou, saw any UFOs today?” Jill questioned him while repositioning the hunting rifle on his back.

“No man! WE just ask if they saw anything unusual in the woods. Nothin else!” Jack replied forcefully. Joe meanwhile was busy looking around, studying the buildings and people.

“And who you gonna ask?” Joe wondered. Jack thought about that for a second and started to walk into the town wordlessly.

He could see a train station a short way away and smiled. “WE ask in there!” he pointed to the train station. “The people there see people all the time, they won’t remember us when we are gone. An’ they may have heard sum gossip from other people! Cmon!” He waved them to follow him and moved quickly towards the station.

Joe and Jill followed cautiously; neither of them was overly thrilled of the idea.

They entered an almost completely empty building. The only occupant was an older man standing behind the ticket window.

Jack approached him, trying to look as normal as possible, walking slowly, swinging his arms and whistling a tune.

“Ah hey there!” he said. The clerk was examining him closely, Jack could not read his expression but the man seemed to be quite awed by his appearance. Many were, Jack had been the winner of several muscle contests! He even had a title… “Can Crusher of the Year”.

“Greetings Sir, how may I be of assistance?” the clerk asked slowly, as if making sure that Jack understood each and every word.

“Uh, well, ya know. We uh… that’s me an my friends” Jack gestured behind himself, Jill and Joe were still standing at the entrance.

“Well, we uh.. we are  hunter.. yes hunter! And uh… you know… we hmm hunt unusual things! Yes, unusual things!” Jack nodded, that would be a good explanation.

The clerk watched him for several seconds before speaking again “Unusual things? AS you say… how may I be of assistance?” he asked another time.

“We…we were wondering if you had seen anything unusual? You know? Something that hasn’t happened before? Mebbe something big?”

The clerk raised an eyebrow and took a look at Jacks companions at the door, then he looked back at Jack and seemed to try finding the right words to say.

“Sir… is that a trick question?” He asked confusedly.

“Trick question?” Jack asked even more confused. “No, ‘m totally serious, totally! You seen anything not normal? And I don’t mean UFOs! No sir! We aren’t here for UFOs! WE just lookin for something unusual!” Jack explained, better to draw the old guy onto a false track, boss said to keep the thing quiet!

The clerk took a deep breath and let it out slowly, then he shook his head.

“Sir, if you are looking for anything unusual might I refer you to the WhateleyAcademy? If you just follow the road in this direction” he pointed into the general direction of Whateley “You will find it. If you seek the… unusual that is the place for you to look.”

Something about the way the old man said that bugged Jack, he seemed almost amused! But now they had a lead! The boss would be proud! Of course, they couldn’t tell him anything until they had found the ufo…

“Thank ye. A big help, you are a really big help!” Jack gave him a gracious smile, though the two missing teeth made it look quite differently, and turned around, walking out and grabbing Jill and Joes arms, pulling them with him quickly.

“We got em! We need to go that way!” Jack showed them the direction and marched on, Joe and Jill on his heals.

“Whatcha got? The UFO? He knew where the UFO is?” Jill asked excitedly.

“Naw, he said sumthin about Whateley being the place to go, so we go to Whateley.” Jack explained authoritatively.

“Whats that Jack?” Joe asked, never having heard of any Whateley place.

“Jack didn’t answer for a second then shrugged. “I dunno, we’ll see, probably anuther town or sumthin.”

The others nodded. Jill thought that they should get a car, but Jack seemed to think that walking was the better idea. He didn’t mind walking that much, but the quicker they would be done about this the better!

So Jill slinked off to the side, to look for a nice ride. He didn’t see any good ones until they were almost out of the town.

There a hummer! Cool! Jill had ridden in one once and dreamed of owning one… well now was the time!

Jack was totally concentrated on leading them to that Whateley stuff and Joe was too stupid to notice anything anyway!

Jill walked over to the car and tried its handle. Unlocked! Seemed like god was on his side, this had to be a sign! He crawled into the car and took the next three minutes to short-circuit it.

Wrooom! The motor sprang to live! Jill quickly got behind the wheel and drove towards Jack and Joe.

Both of them looked up when they heard the mighty roar of the hummers engine.

Jill grinned at them triumphantly.

“Look whata found! Wanna take a ride?” He asked. Jack looked shocked.

“Where didja get that?” he asked. “Uh, found it down that street” Jill pointed at a random street, “Thought walkin would take too long? You going in now?”

Jack seemed to be torn a second but then nodded. “I’m driving!” he commanded. Jill was disappointed but knew better than to argue. He moved over to the shotgun seat and let Jack have the wheel. Joe took the one  of the backseats as always.

Jack gunned the engine and with a leap they were on their way.

Inside the coffee shop the hummer had stood before, police officer Mack Malroy, currently on vacation, dropped his cake. That sounded like his car! He would have recognized that sound anywhere! He jumped out of his seat and ran towards the door, one of the waiter shouted something and ran after him.

Gone! Where the hummer had stood he could now only see an empty space! There! Up ahead he could see the backlights of his car turning around a corner! God damn those thieves!

He swore and would have pulled his gun, running after them shooting, if he hadn’t lef tit at home! Damn his fate!

The waiter stepped to his side, saying something about paying his food. Mack just waved him off, showed his police badge and got out his cell phone, calling the local sheriff. He would be damned if those rowdies got away!

At the sheriffs office they took his call seriously, it wasn’t often that someone stole a car in Dunwich. The sheriff listened to Macka dn after he had explained them what happened and into which direction the hummer had vanished, his face lighted up. That almost sounded as if the car thieves were on their way to WHateley… A plan formed in his mind. He told Mack that they would get the car back without problems and that he knew where they were going.

“Don’t worry we will get them!” he said before hanging up. Then he made another call.

“Mr. Delarose? … Yes it’s the sheriff … Yes I am fine, how are you? ... Good, good. … Oh, yes I am calling to inform you about a little car jacking we just had here. It seemed the thieves are on their way to your institution. … Yes, yes… yes having them arrested by one of your teams would help immensely… I will send a car to take them in. … Oh, yes... No, if we went after them  it would probably take a lot longer, they have quite a lead… Alright, thank you, I am in your debt…”

That went well, the sheriff thought. Now his only worry was if they would get the car back in one piece. That the thieves wouldn’t get away was certain.

Near Whateley the three mercenaries were quite jovially driving their new car. The stereo was turned up high and they were rocking with the beats.

Suddenly they came to a little bridge, it didn’t look quite as stable as it should be, but the three only noticed it when they were halfway over it, none had paid any attention.

“Goddam Jack! Watch the road!” Jill shouted over the music. Jack stepped on the break quite forcefully and the car skidded to a halt but only after they had cleared the bridge.

“Man that was close!” Joe shuddered “Man what if that thing had broken down below us man!” He looked back, in wonder that the bridge still stood.

“Calm down people! I told you I could fly the shuttle and ya didn’t believe me. I tell you I c’n drive the car and you get on ma case man, this is not funny. I am the leader of this team, I know what I’m doin!”

He shouted, just then a sphere of blue energy hit the road beside him, Jack was still looking at Jill and Joe and didn’t see it but the other two were saring behind him with wide eyes.

“Yo! Cut it, whatcha think you can play me for a sucker? You tellin’ me  that Bigfoot is behind me next?” Jack asked on noticing their looks.

“J…Jack…Jack! Joe frantically pointed forward. Jack swung around and his chin almost fell off. Before them stood four uniformed soldiers and two costumed idiots! One of them who held a fist towards the car, and the fist was glowing in crackling blue energy.

One soldier seemed to speak in a small microphone.

“YOU THERE IN THE CAR, THIS IS THE WHATELEY SECURITY FORCE. WE ARE ACTING UNDER THE RIGHT OF THE LOCAL JUSTICE DEPARTMENT! GET OUT OF THE CAR WITH YOUR HANDS ABOVE THE HEAD: NO SUDDEN MOVEMENTS!”

A loud voice boomed at them from said soldier.

The two superheroes, costumed freaks in Jacks opinion menacingly stepped forward.

“Uh.. Jack? What do we do?... Jack?” Jill asked quite frightened. Those were superheroes! Way out of their league… Jill had fought one once.. for all of 10 seconds. And had spend 2 years in jail afterwards… he wasn’t looking forward to a repeat.

“Grab your guns!” Jack whispered.

“WHAT?!?” both of them screamed.

“I said GRAB YOUR GUNS! Shoot at the cops, I know what I’m doing!” Jack half shouted half whispered.

Joe and Jill looked at each other, but they were used to obey commands and so they did, slowly grabbing their hunting rifles.

At the same moment Jack hit the accelerator, the car lurched forward directly at the group before them. As he had hoped the two heroes took flight and the cop-substitutes scattered to the sides.

But instead of keeping to the road Jack jerked the wheel to the right and with a crash they came off the road, trees speeding by them left and right and bushes being crushed below the car.

“Quick! SHOOT!” Jack screamed.

Jill and Joe leaned halfway out of the windows, heedless of the local flora and started firing wildly.

No aim was possible as the hummer lurched and swayed, sometimes coming off the ground completely.

For a moment they were clear, noone seemed behind them, then two shapes sped over them and a millisecond later blue orbs crashed into the trees and ground besides them.

One of the trees seemed to pull itself from the leave covered ground and fell down to block their way. Jack had good reflexes and turned the car so sharply that for a second it slid sideways on two wheels.

Everyone screamed, Jill and Joe desperately holding onto the car frame. Then, after the car was moving into its natural direction, forward, they started firing again. Shots ricocheted of the branches or flew harmlessly into the blue sky.

The heroes had lost their aim for a second but soon more orbs of energy were raining down on them, leaves and wood seemed to pull free of the trees and pelted them painfully.

Suddenly the ground was gone from under them, the whole car flew through the air for what seemed minutes to Jack, he had driven over a small cliff, maybe 6 feet high. Before the car could come crashing down a blue sphere hit it squarely on the hood, sending it spinning end over end.

Noone screamed anymore, Joe and Jill were thrown around , hitting the roof, the seats…

A crash and rattle and the car thudded into the ground, nothing moved for several seconds.

Then Jack groaned, he was hanging half in, half out of his seatbelt. Jill lay by his side and Joe had been catapulted out of the car.

Unbelievably they all where only lightly harmed, Joe the least as he had landed onto soft moss.

He came running, opening Jills door and dragging him out.

“Jack cmon! We gotta run! Cmon!”

He shouted. Jack slowly came to his senses. Then with a jolt he realised what happened and tore at his belt. Where were those bastards of some costumed hero wannabes? He had no intention to go to jail, not because he feared the bars but because it would mean failing his boss and that would deliver him to a fate far worse than any jail.

Finally he got out of the car. Joe was supporting Jill but Jill seemed to be coming around quickly.

“Run! Run! Take different directions! We’ll meet at the shuttle!” Jack commanded before taking off, not caring for his companions.

They too started to run, first staying together but the heroes finally arrived and saw them, one went after them and the other after Jack.

Jill and Joe had no choice but to split, forcing the hero to make a choice. He went after Joe.

Jack meanwhile had his own problems. The hero after his butt was the one with the blue energy, and he made good use of it. Now smaller than the spheres he shot at the car, the pebble like blue energy came as rapidly as if shot from a machine gun.

Jack skipped, slid, crossed and twisted to stay out of their way.

Finally the trees came to his advantage, they got denser and denser, the flying hero lost sight of him more than once. But neither could he fly lower since the tree tops were in his way.

After what seemed like an hour of running Jack had somehow lost him. He was breathing heavily but thanked all his stars for his great stamina.

He sat down next to a tree stump and rested for the next few minutes to get his breath back. Then, after feeling sufficiently relaxed, he made his way back to the shuttle.

Mack was standing below the shading leaves of a tree, a small decline behind him. He was on the verge of crying… his hands shaking and his eyes red.

“My baby! My poor poor baby!” He wailed. In front of him lay a wreck; his hummer had been reduced to two thirds of its height after crashing into the ground. The tires had been pressed upwards into the bend and broken frame. The engine hood looked as if someone had used it for target practice of a rocket launcher. A huge circular hole had been burned into it and half the engine.

All windows were gone, glass littering the ground and the paint had been scraped off on more than one place.

“What the hell happened? My poor baby!” Mack wailed again. The sheriff stepped next to him, placing a comforting hand on the mans shoulder. His face though sported a grin he couldn’t seem to get rid off. This man was crying about his car as much as a wife might about her dead husband.

“There there… I am sure you were ensured, weren’t you? They will pay ou to get a new car… don’t worry.” The sheriff soothed.

“But…but it won’t be my baby!” Mack wailed again. In all his career as a cop he had never cried. At home he was known as Mack “Ironneck” Malroy, the one without emotions, cold as iron.

But this was his CAR! These bastards had taken his balls and crushed them! He would get revenge… somehow!

At the shuttle Jack waited for Jill and Joe, for two hours now… he resolved that he would wait another ten minutes, and if they weren’t  back by then he would scram.

Nine minutes and thirty seconds later both of them broke through the bushes at two different points.

When seeing Jack they started to run towards him. “Jack You made it!” Jill shouted overjoyed. Joe was more reserved. That pansy, he thought. He walked next to Jack and nodded.

“Great idea man, driving us into a bunch of super idiots!” Joe sneered.

Jack just looked at him with eyes burning of anger.

“Shaddap!” he shouted, cowing Joe with his voice. Jill was watching Jack unsurely “What do we do now? Go back to th’ boss?” he asked, fear swinging in his voice.

Jack shook his head. “Naw.. we go back to my house…” he stated. Joe looked at him confused. “And then? Hide there? He knows your place man!” He said disgustedly.

“No you dumbass” Jack replied ” We go there and rearm! Whatcha wanna bet that the aliens are hidin among the hero types?” he grinned “Whata better place is there to hide? We go back home and rearm. Heavy stuff man! We’ll kick them butts! And take the aliens with us!” He laughed triumphantly.

Jill shook his head. He wasn’t half as sure that this would be a good idea. Sure, they had quite a lot of weapons at their disposal, some of them really powerful… but fighting super heroes?

Jill sighed, Jack’s the boss, he’ll know what’s best…

So all three of them pooled into the shuttle, and after several tries Jack got it into the air.

They would fly home, rearm and kick some butt!
